Human
Atlas
Human Atlas is
a huge step in the right direction. It begins to take patient
education out of a text-based world and really give it some
life—providing educational content in color, 3-D animation. There’s
definitely a role for products like this to play in this whole realm
of educating kids and adults, whether it’s at the bedside or up on a
hospital’s Web site. Especially when describing procedures, Human
Atlas animations can do it better than any type of description you
would read—or more likely not read—on a piece of paper.
The Human Atlas application provides narrated Flash animations
covering 150
common diseases and procedures. Each animation is accompanied by
narration, still imagery, virtual reality models, and text components.
The product can be used to educate patients at bedside, in a patient
waiting area, or at home via an Internet connection.
Human Atlas, a collection of 3-D animations that help
clinicians educate patients on adverse health conditions and treatment
options.
This agreement represents tremendous value for healthcare
organizations seeking an innovative technology solution to help their
patients visualize complex conditions and treatments affecting the
human body,” said Peter Green, senior product manager at Thomson
Micromedex. “Whether they are preparing a patient for treatment or
educating a family member, clinicians can use this extraordinary
learning tool to demonstrate otherwise difficult-to-envision treatment
concepts, for example, how a heart valve works or how ear tubes are
inserted.”
Human Atlas provides three-dimensional animated illustrations covering
150 topics that span general health to surgery. Each scientifically
accurate animation is approximately one minute in length. Animations
are accompanied by narration, still imagery, virtual reality models,
and a text transcript. Human Atlas helps hospitals comply with Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
patient education standards.
Human Atlas is available as a complete collection or individual
animations. It integrates easily with a hospital Web site, patient
waiting room kiosk, or a health system’s Intranet or Internet
connection. Human Atlas can be loaded onto a laptop computer to enable
a clinician to access the animations at the point of practice, for
example, a patient’s bedside.
“Human Atlas’ engaging multimedia platform represents a totally new
but fundamental way of ‘educating’ versus ‘informing’ patients how to
participate more fully in their own care. For nurses and doctors,
animation is an easy and efficient learning tool without adding to
their workload.”
